Shell Exploration & Production International Centre, Rijswijk
Seismic research, well-hole stability, new drilling techniques for oil and gas fields: this does not sound like technical jargon to the people at Shell in Rijswijk. There, they are engaged in all kinds of technological developments that are key to the exploration of petroleum–based minerals and the production of oil and natural gas.
Many new technological products and methods have been developed during 20th and 21st centuries. The horizontal drilling technique, for example, has proven very successful in 'surface/wells' technology. Great steps forward have also be made in the control of sand production and the development of smart wells.
Ultramodern
Software development is proving invaluable in ‘underground’ research, especially for modelling underground strata and reservoirs and processing seismic data.
Rijswijk is host to the ultramodern Virtual Reality Centre, for example, where life-size, three-dimensional charts can be viewed of salt rock strata, the sea floor, complex faults, hydrocarbons and drill holes. This facility enables teams from various disciplines to collectively analyse the underground strata where exploration for oil and gas is carried out: clearly a rapid and accurate approach to the work.
