Shell and Team dsm-firmenich on the road to net-zero

This Summer, Shell will help the Dutch cycling team Team dsm-firmenich to move around with less emissions. The successful team will receive a number of charging stations to charge the electric cars at important locations of the cycling team. Team dsm-firmenich will also receive combined charging/refuelling cards for charging the team's electric cars and refuelling Shell's renewable diesel for buses and trucks, where available. In addition, data is collected with which the best solutions for the fleet of Team dsm-firmenich are investigated in order to ultimately achieve zero CO₂ emissions.

"The bicycle itself is of course a sustainable means of transport", says Jente Rijpstra, Head of Commerce Team dsm-firmenich. "Our riders ride in the most beautiful nature areas around the world during the year. Maintaining and stimulating a greener world is therefore an objective that we have been committed to since the start of the team. Running a modern logistics operation is also part of that. With the knowledge and technology that Shell has in-house, we are able to accelerate this."

The (electric) cars, buses and motorhomes of Team dsm-firmenich ensure that the bikes and all the necessary equipment for the riders are in the right place, for example for the ZLM Tour, Critérium du Dauphiné, the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de France. Accurate data from fleet management software built into the electric vehicles will show this season what the best charging choice per kilometer is. With the results, Team dsm-firmenich wants to adjust the fleet in such a way that there will eventually be no CO₂ emissions at all.

Wielenga's team is constantly working on coming up with solutions that allow entrepreneurs and organizations to get on the road more sustainably. "We call this Accelerate to Zero: Shell’s tailor-made advice to help find the best solution together with the user. The electric cars that assist the athletes during the stages of the famous cycling races are charged at one of the charging points of our leading network with around 300,000 charging points in Europe. And the buses and trucks containing the bikes and necessary maintenance and care facilities for the team, they can fill up with Shell Renewable Diesel, if available."
