Shell Technology Centre Amsterdam wordt Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam

“De aanpak van klimaatverandering, vereist fundamentele verandering van ’s werelds economie en energiesysteem. Dat vraagt om ongekende samenwerking van de slimste vernieuwers en bedrijven. De open campus geeft hen de mogelijkheid om met hulp van onze faciliteiten samen te werken aan het versnellen van de energietransitie,” zegt Yuri Sebregts, Chief Technology Officer bij Shell.

De Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam huisvest onder meer laboratoria, kantoren en testomgevingen in een 13 voetbalvelden groot, duurzaam complex. Momenteel werken er in totaal 1.000 mensen uit 50 landen en daar kunnen nog eens een paar honderd mensen bij. Start-ups, scale-ups, instellingen en bedrijven die hun intrek nemen op de campus krijgen toegang tot flexibele kantoorruimtes, labruimtes en labdiensten als 3D-printen en mogelijkheden voor het analyseren van materiaal en productprestaties. Bovendien krijgen ze toegang tot expertise uit de industrie. Een van de belangrijkste troeven van de locatie is de in de Randstad aanwezige talentpool op onder meer het gebied van digitalisering, systeemintegratie en technologische opschaling.

Ferry Winter, campus manager: “We volgen het voorbeeld van andere campussen en creëren hier een plek die alle ingrediënten biedt voor een ecosysteem dat kennisdeling en innovatie in de energietransitie bevordert. Hier brengen we met elkaar oplossingen van idee, naar prototype en uiteindelijk naar de markt en de maatschappij.”

De open campus moet start-ups en scale-ups volgens campus manager Winter in staat stellen om hun potentie maximaal te benutten en innovaties te implementeren. Onderzoeksinstellingen kunnen er hun kennis en onderzoek vertalen naar commercieel haalbare toepassingen met maatschappelijke impact. Bedrijven op hun beurt kunnen er onder meer samenwerken aan technologische oplossingen voor schonere energie. De campus stelt alle partijen in staat om met hulp van haar faciliteiten te innoveren en desgewenst samen te werken met elkaar en/of met Shell.

In de zoektocht naar oplossingen voor de uitdagingen in de energietransitie kunnen partners samenwerken binnen thema’s als circulariteit, CO₂-afvang, opslag en hergebruik, geothermie, hernieuwbare energie, waterstof, elektrificatie, CO₂-arme brandstoffen en CO₂-reductie door bijvoorbeeld het beschermen van natuur.

Shell Technology Centre Amsterdam transforms into Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam to accelerate energy transition

The Shell Technology Centre in the heart of Amsterdam opens its doors and transforms into an open campus. Shell invites start-ups, scale-ups, research institutions and companies to move onto campus and work together on solutions for cleaner energy. The technology centre thus starts a new life with a new name: Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam (ETCA).

"Tackling climate change requires fundamental change of the world's economy and energy system. This requires unprecedented collaboration between the smartest innovators and companies. The open campus gives them the opportunity to work together to accelerate the energy transition with the help of our facilities," says Yuri Sebregts, Chief Technology Officer at Shell.

The Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam houses unique laboratories, offices and testing environments on a combined floor area the size of 13 soccer fields in a large, sustainable building complex. Currently, up to a 1,000 people from 50 countries work on campus, with space for a couple hundred more. Start-ups, scale-ups, research institutions and companies that join the ETCA get access to flexible office spaces, lab spaces and lab services such as 3D printing and possibilities to access our advanced analytical capabilities for materials and product performance evaluation. In addition, they get access to expertise from the industry. One of the most important assets of the location is the talent pool present in the Amsterdam area in fields like digitisation, system integration and technological upscaling.

Ferry Winter, campus manager: “We follow the example of other campuses and create a place that offers all the ingredients for an ecosystem that promotes knowledge sharing and innovation in the energy transition. Here we can take solutions from ideation to prototype and finally to market and society."

According to Winter, the open campus aims to enable start-ups and scale-ups to maximise their potential and implement innovations. Research institutions can translate their knowledge and research into commercially viable applications with social impact. Companies can collaborate on technological solutions for cleaner energy. The campus offers the possibility to innovate using the campus facilities and work together with each other and/or Shell if desired.

In the search for solutions to the challenges in the energy transition, partners can work together within themes such as circularity, carbon capture storage and utilisation, geothermal energy, renewable energy, hydrogen, electrification, low carbon fuels and nature based solutions.
