Veel later dan gepland, in 1986, gaat de Oosterscheldekering (N57) open. Pas dan worden de Zeeuwse hoofdstad en de derde haven van ons land goed ontsloten.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003ETol en zout water\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDaar hangt een prijskaartje aan voor \u003Cb\u003Ede weggebruiker\u003C/b\u003E. Want \u003Cb\u003Etot 1993 moet die tol betalen \u003C/b\u003Eom de brug op te mogen. Dat is langer dan gepland, omdat veel minder automobilisten gebruik maken van de brug dan de provincie had voorspeld. Blijkbaar houden Nederlanders niet van te vermijden extra wegenbelasting.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOok had de provincie zich \u003Cb\u003Everrekend in de bouw- en onderhoudskosten\u003C/b\u003E. Het bestuur ging uit van een zoete Oosterschelde als de stormvloedkering er eenmaal zou zijn. Maar het water bleef zout, waardoor het beton van de brug daartegen met meerkosten extra beschermd moest worden.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EDubbele basculebrug\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EInmiddels staat de brug er alweer een tijdje en gaan er \u003Cb\u003Edagelijks zo’n 10.000 auto’s\u003C/b\u003E overheen. Soms met een pauze op het noordelijk gedeelte, want daar gaat de zogenoemde \u003Cb\u003Edubbele basculebrug\u003C/b\u003E met beweegbare stalen delen zo’n \u003Cb\u003E4.000 keer per jaar open voor hogere boten en schepen\u003C/b\u003E.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEn juist die basculebrug in de Zeelandbrug gaat de weggebruikers dit najaar een beetje pesten. Hij wordt namelijk gerenoveerd en daarvoor moet de verkeersader een aantal weekenden en later zelfs zes weken helemaal dicht. De reisafstand Goes-Zierikzee is dan plots niet 24, maar 52 kilometer — via de Oosterscheldekering.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cb\u003E“Vanwege de leeftijd van de brug, vermoeiing van het materiaal en het toegenomen aantal zware voertuigen ontstaan er scheuren in het stalen dek van de beweegbare brug”\u003C/b\u003E, zo schrijft de provincie Zeeland in een verklaring. De autoriteiten laten ook direct het 26 jaar oude asfalt over de volledige lengte vernieuwen, zodat de verbinding binnenkort niet weer opnieuw langere tijd dicht moet.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EFiets of ambulance\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMaar \u003Cb\u003Edit najaar betekent het dus flink omrijden voor een deel van het woon-werkverkeer en toeristen op de Zeeuwse (schier)eilanden\u003C/b\u003E. Until 1993, they have to pay a toll to use the bridge. That is longer than planned, because far fewer motorists use the bridge than the province had forecast. Apparently, Dutch drivers are not fond of an avoidable extra road tax.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe province had also miscalculated the construction and maintenance costs. The authorities assumed the Oosterschelde would become a freshwater body once the storm surge barrier was in place. But the water remained salty, which meant the bridge’s concrete had to be given additional protection at extra cost.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cb\u003EDouble bascule bridge\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBy now, the bridge has been standing for quite some time, and around 10,000 cars cross it every day. Sometimes traffic has to pause on the northern section, because that is where the so-called double bascule bridge, with movable steel sections, opens about 4,000 times a year for taller vessels.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnd it is precisely that bascule bridge in the Zeeland Bridge that will cause road users some inconvenience this autumn. It is being renovated, which means the traffic artery will have to close completely for several weekends and later even for six weeks. The Goes-Zierikzee journey will suddenly be 52 kilometres (32 miles) rather than 24 kilometres (14 miles) — via the Oosterschelde Storm Surge Barrier.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“Because of the bridge’s age, material fatigue and the increased number of heavy vehicles, cracks are appearing in the steel deck of the movable bridge,” the Province of Zeeland writes in a statement. The authorities are also immediately replacing the 26-year-old asphalt across the full length of the bridge, so that the connection will not need to be closed again for an extended period in the near future.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cb\u003EBicycle or ambulance\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis autumn, then, some commuters and tourists on Zeeland’s islands and peninsulas will face a considerable detour. Except for those who want — or need — to cross the Oosterschelde by bicycle or ambulance, because the Zeeland Bridge will remain open for emergency services and non-motorised two-wheelers.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EUltimately, what was once Europe’s longest bridge can stay in service beyond the previously expected year of 2035.
