Geleidelijk verandert ons energiesysteem en schakelen we over van fossiele energie naar duurzame energie zoals zonne- en windenergie. Dat is beter voor het milieu, een groot voordeel. Het nadeel is dat de zon niet altijd schijnt. Ook is het soms windstil. Dat betekent dat er op sommige momenten te weinig energie is en op andere juist te veel. In periodes van overschot zullen we de energie moeten opslaan, zodat die kan worden gebruikt wanneer dat nodig is. Warmte is trouwens óók energie die prima kan worden opgeslagen om later te gebruiken.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EGeldt seizoensopslag alleen voor duurzame energie?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENee, ook aardgas wordt opgeslagen voor de maanden dat we gas nodig hebben. Meestal is dat in de winter. Dan stoken we meer om onze huizen te verwarmen dan in de zomer.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EMaar hoe kun je die energie dan opslaan?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGoede vraag. Om met aardgas te beginnen: in Nederland zijn verschillende \u003Ca href=\"https://ned.nl/nl/gasopslagen-nederland\"\u003Egasopslagen\u003C/a\u003E waar een buffer wordt aangelegd om de koudere winters mee door te komen. Die raken gedurende de winter langzaam leeg. In de warmere maanden worden de gasvoorraden langzaam weer gevuld.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn de zomer is er vaak een overschot aan warmte, zoals we merken. Warmte kunnen we opslaan in de bodem in zogenoemde warmte-koude-opslagen (WKO). Daar blijft het lekker warm. In de winter, als de behoefte aan een behaaglijke woning weer toeneemt, kan de warmte weer worden opgepompt om te gebruiken.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDan zijn er nog de overschotten aan zonne- en windenergie. Daarvan kan waterstof worden gemaakt via elektrolyse met behulp van water. Bijvoorbeeld in de Holland Hydrogen 1 die Shell aan het afbouwen is op de Tweede Maasvlakte. De waterstof is te gebruiken als energiebron voor de industrie – de Holland Hydrogen 1 gaat aan Shell Pernis leveren – maar zou in theorie ook voor energieopslag kunnen worden gebruikt. De waterstof wordt dan opgeslagen in een grote tank. Of in zoutcavernes. Dat zijn holtes onder de grond waaruit eerder zout is gewonnen. In het seizoen dat er energie nodig is, kan van de waterstof weer stroom worden gemaakt. Of dus rechtstreeks gebruikt worden voor de industrie.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EEn hoe zit het met batterijen?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBatterijen zijn natuurlijk perfect om energie in op te slaan. Ze zijn er speciaal voor gemaakt. Er zijn industriële batterijen voor langetermijnopslag. Maar de capaciteit van de meeste batterijen of accu’s is vaak te klein om veel energie en voor langere tijd, dus meer dan een paar maanden, op te slaan. Wel voor een paar dagen, dus perfect om voor thuis de tijdelijke pieken en dalen in het stroomgebruik mee op te vangen. Of om te gebruiken in de caravan tijdens de vakantie, voor de waterkoker en het opladen van de telefoon of laptop. Our energy system is gradually changing as we move away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. That is good for the environment, which is a major advantage. The downside is that the sun does not always shine, and sometimes there is little or no wind. As a result, there are times when too little energy is available and other times when there is too much. During periods of surplus, we will need to store energy so that it can be used when required. Heat, by the way, is also a form of energy that can be stored very effectively for later use.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cb\u003EIs seasonal storage only relevant for renewable energy?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENo. Natural gas is also stored for the months when demand is highest, which is usually during the winter. We use more gas to heat our homes in the colder months than we do in summer.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cb\u003EBut how can energy actually be stored?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA good question. Starting with natural gas, the Netherlands has several gas storage facilities where reserves are built up to help meet demand during colder winters. These reserves gradually decrease over the winter months and are replenished during the warmer part of the year.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn summer, there is often an abundance of heat, as we have experienced recently. This heat can be stored underground in so-called Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) systems. The heat remains stored in the ground until it is needed. In winter, when the demand for warmth and comfortable homes rises again, the stored heat can be pumped back up and put to use.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThere are also surpluses of solar and wind energy. These can be used to produce hydrogen through electrolysis using water. One example is Holland Hydrogen 1, which Shell is currently completing on near Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The hydrogen can be used as an energy source for industry. Holland Hydrogen 1, for instance, will supply Shell Pernis. In theory, however, hydrogen can also be used for energy storage. It can be stored in large tanks or in salt caverns, which are underground cavities created by previous salt extraction activities. When energy is needed at a later stage, the hydrogen can be converted back into electricity or used directly by industry.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cb\u003EWhat about batteries?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBatteries are, of course, ideal for storing energy. That is precisely what they are designed for. Industrial-scale batteries are available for longer-term energy storage. However, the capacity of most batteries is generally too limited to store large amounts of energy for extended periods, such as several months. They are, however, perfectly suitable for storing energy for a few days. This makes them ideal for balancing temporary peaks and dips in household electricity consumption. They are also useful in a caravan while on holiday, powering appliances such as a kettle and charging a phone or laptop.
