Denk aan de auto waarin je rijdt, de mobiele telefoon die je gebruikt of verpakkingen waarin levensmiddelen langer houdbaar blijven. “Plastic is onmisbaar in ons dagelijks leven” vertelt Paul de Hoog. “Tegelijkertijd vormt plastic afval een steeds groter probleem voor het milieu.” In Nederland wordt meer dan de helft van het plastic afval verbrand.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cb\u003EVan plastic afval naar nuttige producten\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDat kan anders, beter. Via recycling kunnen van plastic afval weer nuttige producten worden gemaakt. Zo zijn minder fossiele grondstoffen nodig voor de productie van kunststoffen en brengen we de hoeveelheid plastic afval naar beneden. “Met de nieuwe installatie zetten we een belangrijke eerste stap om voorloper te worden in de markt voor circulair plastic. En Shell is voorbereid op toekomstige regelgeving voor het verplicht bijmengen van circulair plastic voor kunststof producten”, aldus de business opportunity manager van Shell.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cb\u003EDe upgrader haalt het vuil eruit\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDe nieuwe fabriek, ongeveer een flatgebouw groot, is een recyclinginstallatie voor plastic, ook wel de upgrader genoemd. Deze installatie neemt vloeibaar gemaakt ingezameld plastic in van recyclingfabrieken en haalt met een speciale techniek het vuil eruit. Zodoende is de vloeistof qua werking niet meer te onderscheiden van fossiele grondstoffen en kan deze moeiteloos worden verwerkt tot basischemicaliën voor uiteenlopende toepassingen, zoals voedselverpakkingen en medische producten. De markt voor circulair plastic zal zich nog gaan ontwikkelen.
