Alhoewel de naam wellicht rennende atleten doet vermoeden, gaat het hier om een heel ander soort wedstrijd: hoe ver kun je komen op 1 liter benzine, diesel, ethanol, waterstof of op een zeer beperkte batterij van maximaal 1.000 watt/uur.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003ESafety first\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESnelheid is niet het belangrijkste. Ondanks dat alle bestuurders beschermende kleding en helmen dragen alsof ze Formule 1-coureurs zijn, \u003Ci\u003Esafety first, \u003C/i\u003Egaan hun voertuigen nauwelijks sneller dan 25 kilometer per uur. De rijders maken deel uit van veel grotere technische teams.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOp het Poolse circuit zijn er maar liefst 1.301 deelnemers – sommigen onder de 18 jaar oud – in 121 studententeams uit 25, voornamelijk Europese, landen neergestreken. Er doen ook Nederlandse teams mee: van de hogescholen van Arnhem-Nijmegen (HAN), Amsterdam, Rotterdam en Zwolle (Windesheim); en van het Gymnasium Celeanum uit Zwolle.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EHet absolute record\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHun opgave is niet de gemakkelijkste, zo weet gids Angel te vertellen. Hij is een van de rondleiders die groepen bezoekers langs de keuring, door de paddock en langs de baan. “Het absolute record van een eerder jaar is 3.771 kilometer op 1 liter brandstof. Het is alsof je van Londen naar Rome rijdt en weer terug.\" Even snel rekenend, de gemiddelde benzineauto rijdt doorgaans niet meer dan 16 tot 18 kilometer op een liter.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMocht een van de teams het toch lukken om in het Poolse Silezië verder te komen, dan wordt de prestatie erkend door het Guinness Book of Records. De moderne  Shell Eco-marathon werd voor het eerst in 1985 in Frankrijk gereden, maar de oorsprong gaat veel verder terug. Namelijk tot in 1939, toen twee Shell-medewerkers in de Verenigde Staten een wedje legden over wie het verst kon rijden op één liter brandstof. Toen blijven ze steken op 19,6 kilometer – voor die tijd heel wat.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAngel: \"Bij de Eco-marathon gaat het niet om wie als eerste finisht, maar om het meest efficiënte verbruik en om het leren,\" zegt mijn gids. \"De teams bestaan allemaal uit heel jonge mensen. Zij zijn de knappe koppen van de toekomst; zij kunnen ook een bijdrage aan de energietransitie leveren.\"\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EPrototypes en \u003Ci\u003Eurban concept cars\u003C/i\u003E\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDe Shell Eco-marathon bestaat uit twee hoofdcategorieën: prototypes (de gestroomlijnde “sigaren”) en de \u003Ci\u003Eurban concept cars\u003C/i\u003E, die in theorie zouden moeten voldoen aan de eisen voor de openbare weg. Dit jaar is er ook een derde categorie bij: zelfrijdende urban concept auto’s. Maar daarvan doen er slechts acht mee, inclusief eentje van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDe auto's rijden op drie soorten aandrijving: ofwel een kleine verbrandingsmotor die draait op benzine, diesel of ethanol, of een kleine elektromotor ondersteund door een kleine EV-batterij, danwel een elektromotor aangedreven door een kleine brandstofcel met waterstof.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDe meeste auto’s geven “gas” met een knop op het stuur en ondanks de beperkte snelheid van de voertuigen zijn remmen verplicht op zowel de voor- als achterwielen. Meestal worden de remmen bediend met pedalen in de voorzijde van de wagens (urban concept) of zijn er “fietsknipremmen” bij de prototypes. Een van de begeleiders van het team van de Hogeschool van Lublin uit het oosten van Polen, wil graag een tipje van de sluier oplichten over het geheim van het sleutelen.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“We doen er alles aan om zo licht en energiezuinig mogelijk op de weg te gaan,” zegt docent Jacek Czarnigowski. “Zo hebben we een paar 15-wattschakelers net vervangen door soortgelijke switches die maar 5 watt gebruiken. Echt alles wat we bedenken, is uniek voor de studenten. Ze doen iets wat ze nog nooit eerder deden.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003ELuchtfilters, windzeilen en coureurgewicht\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETerug bij gids Angel. Hij vertelt dat er een lange lijst met voertuigeisen is, de meeste ingevoerd omdat er in het verleden best wel eens vals is gespeeld. \"Zo mogen er in de auto's met verbrandingsmotoren geen luchtfilters zitten, omdat er ooit een team daar 2 tot 3 milliliter brandstof in wist te verstoppen. Dat klinkt als weinig, maar als het record duizenden kilometers bedraagt, heb je met zo’n hoeveelheid extra al snel 50 tot 60 kilometer meer.\"\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWindzeilen op de auto zijn ook niet toegestaan – ook al eens geprobeerd – en  bestuurders moeten allemaal een bepaald minimumgewicht hebben: 50 kilo voor de prototypes en 70 kilo bij de urban concept cars. Is de coureur te licht, dan wordt er ballast in de auto geplaats om het speelveld gelijk te houden. Ook de lengte van de coureurs speelt een rol, want de auto's zijn erg klein. \"Daarom zie je dat de meeste teams een vrouwelijke bestuurder hebben, of een magere man,” stelt Angel.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EAstro-wereld\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDe Jetsons zouden het vast geweldig hebben gevonden op het racecircuit in Silezië. To be clear on the name: this is not a run for athletes, but a very different kind of competition: how far can one get on 1 litre of gasoline, diesel, ethanol, hydrogen, or a very limited battery of no more than 1,000 watt-hours?\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch4\u003E\u003Cb\u003ESafety first\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h4\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESpeed isn’t the main goal. Even though all drivers wear protective gear and helmets like Formula 1 pilots — safety first — their vehicles barely exceed 25 kilometres (15.5 mph) per hour. The drivers are part of much larger technical teams.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOn the Polish circuit, a massive 1,301 participants — some under 18 years old — have gathered. They are part of 121 student teams from 25 mainly European countries.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch4\u003E\u003Cb\u003EThe absolute record\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h4\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETheir task isn’t easy, as guide Angel explains. He is one of the tour-guides, leading visitor groups through the inspection area, the paddock, and along the track. “The absolute record from a previous year is 3,771 kilometres (2,343 miles; edit.) on 1 litre of fuel. That’s like driving from London to Rome and back.” The average petrol car typically reaches no further than 16 to 18 kilometres on the same amount of fuel.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIf one of the teams manages to go even further in Silesia, the achievement is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records. But Angel tempers expectations: “It’s just a bit too warm and windy today,” he says, “and the track is new to all teams.” In the end, a French team wins the European edition, marking 2,266.8 kilometres (1,408.5 miles) on a single litre of gasoline in their prototype car.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch4\u003E\u003Cb\u003ERegional editions of the Eco-marathon\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h4\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Europe and Africa edition has moved from France to Poland, for the first time. But other regional editions continue elsewhere: on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Indiana, USA) for North America, in Qatar for Asia, and in Brazil for Central and South America. The modern Shell Eco-marathon was first held in France in 1985, but its origins go back much further — to 1939, when two Shell employees made a bet about who could drive the furthest on one litre of fuel. Back then, they managed to reach 19.6 kilometres — which was quite a feat for the time.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAngel: “The Eco-marathon isn’t about who finishes first, but about the most efficient consumption, and about learning,” says the guide. “The teams are all made up of very young people. They are the bright minds of the future; they will have to make the energy transition work.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch4\u003E\u003Cb\u003EPrototypes and Urban concept cars\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h4\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Shell Eco-marathon consists of two main categories: prototypes (the “sleek cigars”) and urban concept cars, which in theory should meet public road requirements. Recently, a third category has been added: self-driving urban concept cars with eight of them participating.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe cars run on three types of propulsion: either a small combustion engine powered by gasoline, diesel, or ethanol (most choose ethanol); a small electric motor supported by a small EV battery; or an electric motor powered by a small hydrogen fuel cell.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMost cars accelerate using a button on the steering wheel, and despite their limited speed, brakes are mandatory on both front and rear wheels. Usually, the brakes are operated with pedals at the front of the vehicles. Each car’s consumption is measured over a distance of 35 kilometres (21.7 miles).\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch4\u003E\u003Cb\u003ERed tape\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h4\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWalking through the paddock — the teams’ home base where they work on their cars — gives a good overview. Not only of the teams themselves, but also of their latest vehicle modifications. Red tape on the ground clearly marks where the domain of the stars begins and where regular visitors are not allowed.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA supervisor of the Lublin University of Technology in eastern Poland is willing to share a bit of its tinkering secrets. “We do everything we can to be as light and energy efficient as possible on the road,” Jacek Czarnigowski says. “For example, we recently replaced a few 15-watt switches with similar ones that only use 5 watts. Everything we come up with, is unique to the students. They’re doing something they’ve never done before.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch4\u003E\u003Cb\u003EAir filters, wind sails, and driver weight\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h4\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBack with guide Angel. He explains that there is a long list of vehicle requirements, most introduced because cheating has occurred in the past. “For example, cars with combustion engines aren’t allowed to have air filters, because one team once managed to hide 2 to 3 millilitres of fuel in one. That may sound like a small amount, but when the record is thousands of kilometres, that extra fuel can quickly add 50 to 60 kilometres (31 to 37 miles; edit.).”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWind sails on the cars are also prohibited — someone tried that once — and drivers must meet a minimum weight: 50 kilos for prototypes and 70 kilos for urban concept cars. If the driver is too light, ballast is added to the car to level the playing field.
