Van onder is het duidelijk een boot, 17 meter lang, 6,40 meter breed en met een diepgang van 76 centimeter. Bovendeks een houten kantoortje met volop glas en twee toiletten dat bij iedere benzinepomp aan de wal zou kunnen staan. De rood-gele letters Shell op het dak bevestigen het vermoeden evenals de twee brandstofpompen op de voorplecht. Daar tussenin een vlaggenmast met natuurlijk een Shell-vlag in top.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDit is de Shell Boei, standplaats Rotterdam, het eerste drijvende servicestation van Nederland. Het gevaarte gaat via het water naar Amsterdam om op eenmaal uit de Amstel getakeld de laatste kilometers naar het congrescentrum RAI af te leggen. Daar opent op donderdag 21 maart voor het tweede achtereenvolgende jaar de gecombineerde beurs Hiswa/Goed Kamp de deuren voor het publiek. Voor het einde van diezelfde maand worden minstens 200.000 bezoekers verwacht.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EGespreide groei van welvaart\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDe kampeer en watersportbeurs toont 400 schepen, enkele honderden tenten en ruim 100 verschillende types caravans. De tijd van de naoorlogse wederopbouw maakt langzamerhand plaats voor een breder gespreide groei van welvaart.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDe drukbezochte publieksbeurs is de uitgelezen plek om de Shell Boei aan de watersporters te presenteren. Het vaartuig omvat “een compleet station met comfortabele ontvangstruimte, noodslaapplaats en een kleine werkplaats voor noodreparaties”. En oja, ook toiletten, voor zowel dames als heren.\u003Cbr\u003E\r\n\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EOnderdeks\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAan boord is er opslagruimte voor benzine, superbenzine, smeeroliën, diesel, butaangas, petroleum en zelfs drinkwater. De tanks zitten onderdeks: 14,5 m³ voor benzine, 10 m³ voor superbenzine, 13,8 m³ voor zowel diesel evenals voor drinkwater. Een mengsmeerpomp zorgt ervoor dat voor ieder type motor de juiste brandstof gemaakt kan worden.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDe Boei zal na de beurs geen vaste ligplaats krijgen, zo maakt het bedrijf bekend. In plaats daarvan meert het servicestation aan bij drukke watersportevenementen. From below, it was clearly a boat—17 metres (55.8 feet) long, 6.40 metres (21 feet) wide, and with a draft of 76 centimetres (30 inch). On deck a wooden office with plenty of windows and two toilets, resembling any roadside fuel station. The red-yellow Shell were clearly visible on the roof. The two fuel pumps on the foredeck had a flagpole between them, naturally flying a Shell flag at the top.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis was the \u003Cb\u003EShell Boei (\"Shell Buoy\")\u003C/b\u003E, based in Rotterdam and the first floating service station in the Netherlands. The vessel traveled by water to Amsterdam, where it was hoisted out of the Amstel River to cover the final kilometers to the RAI Convention Centre for the trade fair for camping, water sports and recreation (Hiswa). On Thursday 21 March the doors opened to the public for the second consecutive year, awaiting the expected 200,000 visitors before the end of the month.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cb\u003EWidespread growth of prosperity\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe camping and water sports fair showcased 400 boats, several hundred tents, and over 100 different types of caravans. The post-World War II reconstruction era was gradually giving way to a more broadly distributed growth in prosperity in the Netherlands.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe popular public fair was the perfect place to present the Shell Buoy to water sports enthusiasts. The vessel included “a complete station with a comfortable reception area, emergency sleeping quarters, and a small workshop for emergency repairs.” And yes, toilets too—for both ladies and gentlemen.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cb\u003EBelow deck\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOn board, there was storage space for normal fuels, lubricating oils, butane gas, and even drinking water. The tanks were located below deck: 14.5 m³ (3830.5 US gal.) for petrol, 10 m³ (2641.7 US gal.) for premium petrol, and 13.8 m³ (3645.6 US gal.) each for diesel and drinking water. A mixing pump ensured the right fuel could be prepared for every type of engine.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAfter the fair, the Buoy would not receive a permanent berth, the company announced. Instead, the floating service station would dock at busy water sports events.
