Zij zijn de verkeersleiding van de energiestromen en dat is een uitdaging waar Jaap (29) van geniet.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“Het is een dynamische omgeving, maar ik heb al zoveel geleerd en ik vind het geweldig,” zegt Jaap. “Tijdens het tweejarige operations-programma doorloop je vier verschillende afdelingen binnen Shell Trading and Supply. T&S optimaliseert de handel en levering van diverse producten: van aardgas en ruwe olie tot biobrandstoffen en duurzame producten.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWat is het doel van het programma? “Het creëren van de best opgeleide commercieel operators”, stelt Jaap. Dit wordt bereikt door praktijkervaring binnen T&S, technische trainingen en mentorschap. “Als operator ondersteun je de traders bij het sluiten van deals en het transporteren van producten van A naar B. Je doet ervaring op met contracten, vracht, de productdesk en leert hoe logistieke knooppunten en productielocaties zoals Shell in Pernis functioneren.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb style=\"font-size: 0.8125rem;\"\u003EVaardigheden tot leven brengen\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca title=\"Shell Pernis\" href=\"https://www.shell.nl/over-ons/locaties/pernis.html\"\u003EShell Pernis\u003C/a\u003E, de grootste raffinaderij van Europa, heeft een speciale plek in Jaaps hart. “Mijn vader werkte bij Shell en ik groeide op met Shell-tankstations overal om me heen. ’s Nachts, wanneer ik in de buurt van Rotterdam reed, zag ik de brandende lichten van Pernis en kreeg ik kippenvel – ik zag ze als de motor van Nederland, die energie levert aan bedrijven en huishoudens. Ik besloot de familietraditie voort te zetten en solliciteerde voor het Operations Development Programme van T&S.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EJaap werd geboren in Leeuwarden, groeide op in Groningen (“nuchter dus!”) en is naar eigen zeggen nu “verliefd” op zijn woonplaats Amsterdam. Sinds hij werd toegelaten tot het T&S-programma ontwikkelt hij zijn vaardigheden, sinds dag één. “Tijdens mijn studie had ik een bijbaan als chauffeur, wat uiteindelijk uitmondde in een functie als directiechauffeur tijdens de coronaperiode. Hoewel dit niet direct gerelateerd is aan mijn huidige loopbaan, heeft deze ervaring mij veel geleerd over verantwoordelijkheid, discretie en flexibiliteit in dynamische omstandigheden.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDaarnaast heb ik in gesprekken mijn persoonlijke achtergrond gedeeld. Mijn vader overleed toen ik één jaar oud was. Hoewel ik nooit verhalen van hem heb gehoord over Shell, heeft dit verlies mij wel extra nieuwsgierig gemaakt naar zijn werk en naar het bedrijf. Deze nieuwsgierigheid speelde een belangrijke rol in mijn keuze om bij Shell te solliciteren.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb style=\"font-size: 0.8125rem;\"\u003EGestimuleerd om vooruit te gaan\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETerugblikkend op zijn tijd als chauffeur, zegt Jaap zich nu zelfverzekerder te voelen tussen zijn ervaren collega’s – iets wat hij toeschrijft aan de ondersteunende cultuur bij Shell. “Mijn leidinggevende moedigt me aan om buiten mijn comfortzone te stappen, om niet bang te zijn collega’s met enorme expertise uit te dagen. They are the traffic controllers of energy flows, and that is a challenge Jaap (29) enjoys.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“It’s a dynamic environment, but I’ve already learned so much and I love it,” says Jaap. “During the two-year Operations Development Programme, one rotates through four different departments within Shell Trading and Supply. T&S optimises the trading and delivery of various products: from natural gas and crude oil to biofuels and sustainable products.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhat is the goal of the program? “To create the best-trained commercial operators,” Jaap explains. This is achieved through hands-on experience within T&S, technical training, and mentorship. “As an operator, you support traders in closing deals and transporting products from A to B. You gain experience with contracts, freight, the product desk, and learn how logistical hubs and production sites like Shell Pernis operate.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: normal;\"\u003EBringing skills to life\u003C/span\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca title=\"Shell Pernis\" href=\"https://www.shell.nl/over-ons/locaties/pernis.html\"\u003EShell Pernis\u003C/a\u003E, the largest refinery in Europe, holds a special place in Jaap’s heart. “My father worked at Shell, and I grew up surrounded by Shell petrol stations. At night, when I drove near Rotterdam, I saw the glowing lights of Pernis and got goosebumps—I saw them as the engine of the Netherlands, delivering energy to businesses and households. I decided to continue the family tradition and applied for the Operations Development Programme at T&S.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EJaap was born in Leeuwarden, grew up in Groningen—both in the northeast of the country, and now says he’s “in love” with his current home, Amsterdam. Since joining the T&S program, he’s been developing his skills from day one. “During my studies, I had a side-job as a driver, which eventually led to a role as an executive chauffeur during the COVID period. Although this isn’t directly related to my current career, that experience taught me a lot about responsibility, discretion, and flexibility in dynamic situations.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe also shared his personal background in conversations. His father passed away when Jaap was one year old. “Although I never heard stories from him about Shell, this loss made me even more curious about his work and the company. That curiosity played a key role in my decision to apply to Shell.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: normal;\"\u003EEncouraged to Move Forward\u003C/span\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELooking back on his time as a chauffeur, Jaap now feels more confident among his experienced colleagues—something he attributes to Shell’s supportive culture. “My manager encourages me to step outside my comfort zone, to not be afraid to challenge colleagues with deep expertise.
