In deze topsportomgeving wordt niets aan het lot overgelaten.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\"Voordat asfalt wordt aangebracht, gaan er maanden van uitdokteren, testen en planning aan vooraf. Denk daarbij aan de steilheid van de helling van de bochten, rechte stukken en lokale klimatologische omstandigheden. In het lab wordt alles bekeken, berekend en beproefd. Gelukkig voor jullie wordt er vaak gekozen voor de bitumenproducten van Shell”, aldus de Italiaanse circuitexpert.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShell Cariphalte, dat op Zandvoort wordt gebruikt, is speciaal ontworpen voor racecircuits. Het heeft een sterke hechting en is bestand tegen de horizontale schuifkrachten die ontstaan als een racewagen optrekt of remt in een bocht.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003E\"De beste taart\"\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBitumen is het bindmiddel dat het zand, steen of grind in asfalt bij elkaar houdt. Bitumen voor racecircuits wordt in een laboratorium geselecteerd op basis van de mix, classificatie, zuiverheid en ingrediënten. Zaffelli noemt dit “het vinden van de beste taart\". En blijkbaar heeft Shell voor Zandvoort en veel van de andere circuits in de wereld de beste \"eieren\" voor het beste eindresultaat.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBelangrijk is dat de kwaliteit van het raceasfalt overal op het circuit gelijk is, zegt Zaffelli. “Voordat we het aanbrengen, moeten we weten wat we kunnen verwachten. Onder meer hoeveel grip het asfalt geeft en hoeveel tijd het nodig heeft om te drogen in natte weersomstandigheden.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShell mag het bitumen dan leveren, het aanbrengen ervan wordt gedaan door een aannemer. Maar wel onder het toeziend oog van het team van Zaffelli op de banen waar hij voor wordt ingehuurd. \"We monitoren het proces continu, ook met lasers. Zodra er een afwijking is, bijvoorbeeld in de aangebrachte dikte van het wegdek, of bij een technisch probleem, ondernemen we direct actie. We kunnen geen enkel risico lopen. Zo ontdekten we op het circuit van Spa in België een hobbeltje van 2 centimeter breed en dat hebben we meteen verholpen.\"\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003E\"Zandvoort is een echte test\"\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHet circuit van Zandvoort vernieuwde anderhalf jaar geleden zijn pitstraat, een klus van het team van Zaffelli en wegenbouwgroep KWS. \"Asfalt aanbrengen op Zandvoort is een ware beproeving. Want we bouwen op zand, dat de natuurlijke neiging heeft te verschuiven. Bovendien moest het werk in februari worden gedaan, voor geplande races in maart, met winterse temperaturen en regen als extra uitdagingen.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMaar als het asfalt eenmaal is aangebracht, kan ieder circuit volgens Zaffelli al 24 uur na het aanbrengen de eerstvolgende race organiseren. In this high-performance environment, nothing is left to chance.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E“Before asphalt is applied, months of planning, testing, and calculations take place. Think of the slope of the curves, straight sections, and local climate conditions. Everything is examined, calculated, and tested in the lab. Fortunately for you, Shell’s bitumen products are often chosen,” says the Italian circuit expert.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShell Cariphalte, used at Zandvoort, is specially designed for racetracks. It has strong adhesion and can withstand the horizontal shear forces that occur when a race car accelerates or brakes in a corner.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: normal;\"\u003E“The best cake”\u003C/span\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBitumen is the binder that holds the sand, stone, or gravel in asphalt together. Bitumen for racetracks is selected in a lab based on its mix, classification, purity, and ingredients. Zaffelli calls this “finding the best cake.” And apparently, Shell provides the best “eggs” for the best final result at Zandvoort and many other circuits around the world.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EConsistency in asphalt quality across the entire track is crucial, says Zaffelli. “Before we apply it, we need to know what to expect—how much grip the asphalt provides and how long it takes to dry in wet conditions.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShell may supply the bitumen, but the application is done by a contractor—under the watchful eye of Zaffelli’s team at the tracks where he is hired. “We continuously monitor the process, including using lasers. If there’s any deviation—like in the thickness of the surface or a technical issue—we act immediately. We can’t take any risks. For example, at Spa in Belgium, we discovered a bump just 2 centimetres (0.8 inch; edit.) wide and fixed it right away.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: normal;\"\u003E“Zandvoort is a real test”\u003C/span\u003E\u003C/h3\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Zandvoort circuit renewed its pit lane a year and a half ago—a job handled by Zaffelli’s team and road construction group KWS. “Applying asphalt to Zandvoort is a real challenge. We’re building on sand, which naturally tends to shift. Plus, the work had to be done in February, ahead of races in March, with winter temperatures and rain as extra hurdles.”\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBut once the asphalt is in place, any circuit can host its next race just 24 hours later, according to Zaffelli. He has a few favorite racetracks: “For Formula 1, Zandvoort is definitely one of
