In Europa is afgesproken dat er vanaf dit jaar gemiddeld 2% van alle geleverde brandstof aan Europese vliegvelden uit Sustainable Aviaton Fuel moet bestaan. Gemiddeld. Dus in het ene vliegtuig zal meer zitten, in het andere misschien helemaal niets. Bij vliegtuigmaatschappijen betaal je een toeslag om ervoor de zorgen dat je in theorie op SAF vliegt. Van je extra bijdrage bovenop je ticket worden dan SAF-certificaten gekocht, waarmee het aandeel SAF in toekomstige vluchten toeneemt.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EGebeurt dit bijmengen alleen in de luchtvaart?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENee. Ook bij benzine wordt een gedeelte (tot 10%) biobrandstof bijgemengd. Dat verplichte bijmengpercentage is in de luchtvaart nu lager. Maar internationale organisaties als de IATA of de EU kunnen die doelen alsnog bijstellen. Zo heeft in de scheepvaart de internationale maritieme organisatie IMO ambitieuzere doelen gesteld dan de EU.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EVliegen op SAF, zorgt dat voor minder CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E-uitstoot?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGewone kerosine wordt gemaakt van aardolie. SAF bestaat uit restproducten, zoals frituurvet of landbouwafval. De CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E-belasting van deze biobrandstof over de gehele keten is daarmee een stuk lager, tussen de 50% en 80%. Dat komt doordat de hernieuwbare bronnen waaruit SAF is gemaakt – denk aan het rapsolieplantje of de steel van een maisplant – ook  weer CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E kunnen opnemen. Wat er tijdens het vliegen uit het toestel zelf komt aan broeikasgassen, daarin verschillen gewone kerosine en SAF echter niet.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EHelpt SAF op weg naar een schonere luchtvaartsector?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDat zeker, het is een stap naar een luchtvaartsector met minder blijvende uitstoot. SAF wordt gezien als een zogenoemde insetting-maatregel, een maatregel die in de eigen waardeketen wordt genomen om de CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E-uitstoot te verminderen. Dat is concreter dan zogenaamde offset-maatregelen, zoals investeren in natuurgebieden om CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E-uitstoot te compenseren, die uiteraard ook waardevol zijn.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMomenteel is het aandeel SAF in de luchtvaart laag. Ook is de prijs zo’n drie tot vijf keer hoger dan conventionele kerosine. Voor dit type vliegtuigbrandstof geldt dat er ambitieuze wettelijke verplichtingen nodig zijn om het aandeel harder te laten groeien. En dat is nodig, want de Nederlandse luchtvaartsector is verantwoordelijk voor 6,5% van onze totale CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E-uitstoot (in 2023). En 74% van de totale CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E-uitstoot van alle vakanties wordt veroorzaakt door vliegen.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EWat is de volgende stap in SAF?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDe volgende stap is vliegen op synthetische kerosine, uiteindelijk de gewenste vorm van SAF. Dit is vliegtuigbrandstof gemaakt van (afgevangen) CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E, H\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003EO en groene stroom. Doordat er bij het maken ervan net zo veel CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E uit de lucht wordt onttrokken als dat er bij het gebruik ervan wordt uitgestoten, wordt vliegen CO\u003Csub\u003E2\u003C/sub\u003E-neutraal. En echt duurzaam wordt het als alle drie de componenten hernieuwbaar zijn. Er zijn nog maar enkele proefvluchten op synthetische kerosine gemaakt. Het is op dit moment nog erg duur om synthetische kerosine te produceren.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cb\u003EKun je al 100% op SAF vliegen?\u003C/b\u003E\u003C/h2\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDat is mogelijk. Vliegtuigmaatschappijen experimenteren ermee. Zo vliegt KLM vanaf september op een aantal vluchten volledig met SAF. Als proef. Dit zijn vluchten naar Hamburg en Londen. Redelijk dichtbij dus. Dat komt goed uit, want biobrandstoffen hebben over het algemeen een iets lagere energetische waarde dan fossiele brandstoffen. Met andere woorden: je kunt er minder ver mee vliegen.
