Virtuele vernieuwing op Shell Moerdijk
10 feb. 2020

[Voice of Victor Vertregt, Inspection Engineer]
My name is Victor. I have been working as an inspection engineer at Shell Moerdijk for two years. Before that, I worked for Shell in Amsterdam for a few years.
Panning shot of wheel up close and then a different worker in PPE appearing from behind it walking at a medium pace along scaffolding. Medium shot of the worker filmed from the front. Medium shot of the worker walking from the back with installations and scaffolding in the background. Medium shot of the two workers walking towards each other and shaking hands. Drive by shot of part of the installation of Moerdijk.
[Voice of Domien Doggens, Inspection Engineer]
My name is Domien. After 42 years of working for Shell, I will be retiring soon. The last 4 years I've been managing the documentation of this beautiful installation.

In the past, we used to keep large drawings on paper of these sort of complex installations.
The past 2 years, Domien and I have been working on digitizing that process.

We accomplish this by stitching high resolution photos together and converting these to 3D models with our 3D software.
Screen recording of 3D model software where we see part of the installation. The different parts are highlighted digitally with different colours. Same shot but the two men come walking into the shot, stand next to each other and Victor starts pointing at the model and talks to camera.

And this is what that looks like…
Thanks to this we do not need to be on site to do our work and that is very important to us.
During a maintenance job for example, if we want to know how many scaffolds we need, we can just find out from behind our desks.
Medium shot of Victor in the office wearing a virtual reality headset and a joystick in his hand, looking around the 3D model. Close up of the hand holding the joystick and two computer screens with the software running in the background. Close shot of Victor’s head wearing the VR headset. Close up of one of the desktop screens showing what Victor sees through his VR headset.
[Victor]
And if we need to train new operators we can do that outside of the site in a safe manner.

As for now, we have modulated two parts of the installation. Next step is to modulate the whole factory at Shell Moerdijk in the coming three years. And Victor is going to do that for us!
