Shell waarborgt dat Nederlandse treinen ook na 2024 duurzaam rijden

Binnen de afspraken levert PZEM de stroom en Shell de zogeheten Garanties van Oorsprong (GVO). Die GVO’s laten zien waar de stroom vandaan komt, in dit geval Europese zonne- en windparken. Daarmee hebben alle reizigers- en goederenvervoerders op het Nederlandse spoor, met de NS als grootste, de garantie dat er in Europa op jaarbasis net zoveel duurzame elektriciteit wordt geproduceerd als de treinen verbruiken. Het gaat dan om 1,46 TWh per jaar, meer dan de stroombehoefte van een grote stad als Amsterdam of Rotterdam. Bij elkaar is dat ruim 1% van het totale elektriciteitsverbruik van Nederland.

Frans Everts, president-directeur Shell Nederland, is blij met de afspraken met de Nederlandse spoorvervoerders. “Voor wie duurzaam van A naar B wil, is de trein een geweldige oplossing. Ik ben er dan ook trots op dat Shell drie jaar lang samen met PZEM de stroombehoefte van het Nederlands spoor met zonne- en windenergie garandeert.”

Shell ensures that Dutch trains keep on running on renewables after 2024

Shell and energy company PZEM will provide the Dutch railways operators with renewable electricity from wind and solar power starting in 2025. That is the outcome of the recent tender, announced today by the parties involved. The contract is valid for three years, until the end of 2027. The agreement is still provisional, respecting the statutory objection period of three weeks.

Within the agreement, PZEM supplies the electricity and Shell the so-called Guarantees of Origin (GO). These GOs provides guaranteed proof of the energy sources, in this case European solar and wind farms. All passenger and freight carriers on the railroads of the Netherlands – including the NS as the biggest – will therefore have the guarantee that the equivalent of their trains’ annual power consumption comes from renewable sources in Europe.

The agreement comprises 1.46 TWh a year, more than the electricity demand of a large city like Amsterdam or Rotterdam. The amount is more than 1% of the total electricity consumption in the Netherlands.
