Shell helpt met nieuw fonds sociale start-ups vooruit
Shell lanceert vandaag het Shell Impact Fund, een fonds voor beginnende, sociale ondernemers. Het fonds is er voor start-ups waarvan Shell verwacht dat ze met hun aanpak huishoudens of het mkb kunnen helpen om sneller te verduurzamen. Dat kan bijvoorbeeld doordat ze woningen helpen isoleren, of elektrisch deelvervoer stimuleren. De eerste vier bedrijven ontvingen vandaag hun bijdragen uit het fonds.
“Met het Shell Impact Fund willen we ondernemers die echt het verschil kunnen maken, financieel ondersteunen om sneller te groeien. Zo kunnen ze hun betekenisvolle bijdrage aan een meer inclusieve energietransitie in ons land vergroten”, zegt Anne Schreuder, societal impact manager bij Shell Nederland en verantwoordelijk voor de lancering van het nieuwe fonds.
100.000 huishoudens en bedrijven
Shell hoopt met de doelgerichte investeringen uit het fonds indirect 100.000 huishoudens en midden- en kleinbedrijven te helpen met het verlagen van hun energiekosten, het verkleinen van hun energieverbruik of het zorgen voor toegang tot schonere energie en duurzamere mobiliteit.
Shell Nederland heeft 15 miljoen euro vrijgemaakt om de komende drie jaar in te zetten voor initiatieven die de samenleving vooruit helpen naar een duurzamer energiesysteem. Ongeveer de helft van dit bedrag wordt besteed aan het Shell Impact Fund.
Bedrijven die steun krijgen van het fonds, worden uit een open inschrijving geselecteerd. De bijdrage moet gezien worden als een soort aanmoediging en is een combinatie van een gift (subsidie) en durfkapitaal. Shell haalt geen geld uit het fonds, en er zal ook niets naar de aandeelhouders vloeien.
Voor buurten met lagere inkomens
OnzeAuto is een van de eerste vier start-ups die een bijdrage uit het Shell Impact Fund krijgt. “Wij ondersteunen lokale gemeenschappen om over te stappen van een eigen auto, die vaak nog op fossiele brandstoffen rijdt, naar een elektrische deelauto”, zegt Otto Smit, directeur van OnzeAuto.
“Onze aanpak is erop gericht dat buren elkaar hierbij aanzetten en steunen. Samen met het Shell Impact Fund kunnen we het tempo versnellen om nieuwe initiatieven en proefprojecten te starten, ook in buurten waar veel mensen met lagere inkomens wonen.”
Shell hoopt de komende drie jaar ten minste zestien veelbelovende beginnende ondernemers met het Shell Impact Fund te kunnen ondersteunen. Het is de bedoeling dat eventuele hierop volgende investeringen terugvloeien in het fonds, zodat andere sociale ondernemingen er ook weer aanspraak op kunnen maken. Het fonds richt zich in eerste instantie op Nederlandse initiatieven, maar kan in de toekomst eventueel worden uitgebreid naar andere landen.

Shell helps social start-ups move forward with a new fund
Today, Shell launches the Shell Impact Fund, a fund for social entrepreneurs in their early stage of business. The fund is for start-ups with an approach that Shell expects will help households, or small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), becoming more sustainable faster. 100,000 households and businesses
With the fund’s targeted investments, Shell hopes to indirectly help 100,000 households and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with reducing their energy costs, reducing their energy consumption, or ensuring access to cleaner energy and more sustainable mobility.
Shell Netherlands has made 15 million euros available to use over the next three years for initiatives that help society move forward towards a more sustainable energy system. From this amount, the Shell Impact Fund will get about half.
Companies that receive support from the fund are selected by open tender. A contribution from the Shell Impact Fund should be seen as encouragement and is a combination of a grant and venture capital. Shell will leave the money within the fund, with a strict no-return policy to either Shell or its shareholders.
For neighbourhoods with lower incomes
OnzeAuto (translated from Dutch: OurCar) is one of the first four start-ups to receive a contribution from the Shell Impact Fund. "We support people in local communities to switch from their own car, often running on fossil fuels, to a shared electric car," says Otto Smit, CEO of OnzeAuto.
"Our approach is aimed at getting neighbours to encourage and support each other in this. Together with the Shell Impact Fund, we can accelerate the pace of new initiatives and pilot projects, including in neighbourhoods with a concentration of people with lower incomes."
Over the next three years, Shell hopes to support at least sixteen promising start-ups with financial support from the Shell Impact Fund. It is Shell’s intention that any subsequent investments will flow back into the fund, to give more social enterprises their chance to grow. The fund will initially focus on initiatives in the Netherlands, but Shell considers expansion to other countries in the foreseeable future.
