2. Do your homework on the company and the programme
2. Do your homework on the company and the programme
Just like an in-person interview, you will do better with some research beforehand. Learn as much as you can about Shell and the position you are applying for, so you can provide clear arguments when answering the questions. Our recruiters want to know why you want to work for Shell, how you hope to improve your skills and strengths within the company, and how we can help you moving your career forward.
3. Write down your work and study experiences
3. Write down your work and study experiences
When preparing for your video interview, think about previous achievements and experiences. Write them down. Especially if you were exploring new opportunities, resolving difficult situations, or successfully working with others in those moments. Refine and update what you have written. Include relevant work or study experience. However, do not confuse this preperation with so-called competency-based questions, such as dealing with conflict, addressing problems, and achieving results outside of work. Of course, they are also important, but don't confuse them.
4. "Drive your CAR"
4. "Drive your CAR"
The Shell recruiters use the CAR concept to analyze your video. So you can prepare for this as well. CAR stands for Capacity, Achievements and Relationship skills.
- Capacity: you willl need to bring the intellectual, analytical and creative ability to learn quickly, identify issues, make judgements and propose solutions.
- Achievements: we will expect plenty of enthusiasm, resilience and confidence - you will be someone who can always get things done.
- Relationship skills: you should have the character and ability to work effectively with others in a diverse team.
5. Act like it is a normal online meeting
5. Act like it is a normal online meeting
Interviews, whether in-person or via video, can be nerve-wracking. A tip: pretend you are having a conversation with an old acquaintance and you will probably feel more comfortable.
6. Use the time to think your answers through
6. Use the time to think your answers through
You will get 30 seconds to think and come up with your answer, which is a big advantage over an in-person interview, where you will likely often feel compelled to answer faster. So use the time that you have got.
Practice at home with a timer and record yourself. Practice makes perfect. Plus you likely feel more comfortable with the process and the timings.
7. You are a STAR
7. You are a STAR
STAR is another format that Shell recruiters recommend you prepare for. It stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result.
Briefly outline your situation and provide some background information. Clearly articulate what your task was or what you needed to accomplish. What did you do as an individual (Action) to contribute to the success of the wider team. And what the result was, or even better, a learned lesson.
8. Focus on "I" and not on "we"
8. Focus on "I" and not on "we"
While it is good to show that you are a team player, do not forget to highlight your accomplishments as an individual. Be sure to clearly state what role YOU specifically played in each example you share.

5 tips for a better CV
Present clear proof of your skills and qualifications
Most recruiters spend about 7 minutes looking at a candidate's profile. It is therefore important to have a clear and concise overview of your most important competencies and experiences. For starters and recent graduates, it is therefore extra important to list all the things that matter in your personal development. Include work experiences, but certainly volunteer activities as well.
Remember the details
Sometimes the difference between a good resume and a great one is in the details. If you were active in a student association during your studies, that is great, of course, but do about the details. For example, were you responsible for the budget, and how big was the association? Or tell us about your experiences as a volunteer. Like: "Together with others, we provided a thousand people with food and blankets." Numbers often speak louder than words.
Write clearly and concisely
Write your resume clearly and concisely. A tip: at the top, put your career goal and why you are qualified for the specific position you are applying for. Seeing all the strengths at a glance helps recruiters. Only include details that provide insight into performance. Avoid vague and general statements.
Use keywords
Use keywords that fit the position you are applying for. Recruiters scan for these when browsing a CV. For example, if the role you are applying for an analyst role, , the recruiter would like to see what analysis competencies or experiences you have. For a creative role, painting or dancing can matter. For a structural engineering role, it can be an advantage if you love building with Lego.
Let a friend proofread your CV
When your resume is finished, have a friend proofread it. Not only to remove any language errors, but also for the outside perspective. Perhaps there are words in it that are difficult to understand. For students: assume that the recruiter does not know the student association, so provide sufficient explanations that are clear to people outsiders as well.
