"Shell zorgt voor tienduizenden banen in Nederland"
Shell speelt al meer dan 130 jaar een belangrijke rol in de Nederlandse samenleving. Als energieleverancier, banenmotor en investeerder in innovatie. In opdracht van Shell deed economisch adviesbureau Oxford Economics onderzoek naar de sociaal-economische bijdrage van Shell in Nederland. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat Shell in 2022 ruim 10 miljard euro bijdroeg aan de Nederlandse economie.

De aanwezigheid van Shell zorgt voor tienduizenden banen in Nederland; in 2022 ging het in totaal om zo’n 53.000 banen, direct en indirect. Shell kocht in dat jaar bij 2.300 verschillende bedrijven in Nederland producten en diensten in. Directe en indirecte belastingbetalingen via Shell leverde de Nederlandse schatkist in 2022 5,8 miljard euro op.
Shells bijdrage aan de energievoorziening
Oxford Economics deed ook onderzoek naar Shells bijdrage aan de energievoorziening in Nederland. Het adviesbureau concludeert dat Shell de afgelopen decennia een substantiële bijdrage heeft geleverd aan de Nederlandse energiezekerheid. Een van de belangrijkste bijdragen heeft betrekking op de gasopslagcapaciteit. Tussen 2011 en 2024 waren de opslagfaciliteiten van NAM (50% Shell, 50% ExxonMobil) goed voor gemiddeld 69% van het totale Nederlandse gas in opslag.
Met de olie- en gasproductie via NAM en de raffinage van brandstoffen op Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam droeg Shell voor een belangrijk deel bij aan de Nederlandse energievoorziening. Door tegelijkertijd te investeren in duurzame projecten draagt Shell volgens Oxford Economics bij aan de overgang naar een energiesysteem met minder emissies, terwijl het bedrijf de Nederlandse energiezekerheid op de langere termijn waarborgt. Shells hernieuwbare energie-capaciteit steeg van 3% in het totale eindverbruik van elektriciteit in 2022 naar 9% in 2024.
Energie van vandaag en de toekomst
“Nederland is een belangrijk land voor Shell”, zegt president-directeur Frans Everts van Shell Nederland. “Bijna al onze activiteiten zijn hier vertegenwoordigd. We leveren de energie die vandaag de dag nodig is en werken hard aan een energiesysteem met minder emissies voor de toekomst. De afgelopen jaren namen we voor 6,5 miljard euro aan investeringsbeslissingen in de Nederlandse energietransitie. We zijn nu volop aan het bouwen en innoveren, zodat we hier ook in de toekomst een belangrijke rol kunnen blijven spelen.”
Impact R&D-uitgaven op Nederlandse economie
Oxford Economics keek eveneens naar de impact van Shells R&D-uitgaven op de Nederlandse economie. In 2022 stopte Shell 338 miljoen euro in onderzoek in Nederland, met name energietransitie gerelateerd. Het adviesbureau schat in dat dit de economie vanaf 2030 elk jaar 151 miljoen oplevert, omdat we dan efficiënter kunnen gaan werken en meer voor elkaar krijgen. De investeringen in onderzoek en innovatie reiken verder dan de directe R&D-uitgaven. Vanuit haar Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam werkt Shell samen met start-ups, scale-ups, kennisinstituten, academici en bedrijven aan oplossingen voor de energietransitie.

Shell has played an important role in Dutch society for more than 130 years. As an energy supplier, job engine and investor in innovation. Commissioned by Shell, economic consultancy Oxford Economics conducted research into Shell's socio-economic contribution in the Netherlands. The study shows that Shell contributed more than 10 billion euros to the Dutch economy in 2022.
Shell's presence supports tens of thousands of jobs in the Netherlands. In 2022, a total of about 53,000 jobs were created, directly and indirectly. In that year, Shell purchased products and services from 2,300 different companies in the Netherlands. Direct and indirect tax payments through Shell generated 5.8 billion euros for the Dutch treasury in 2022.
Shell's contribution to the energy supply
Oxford Economics also conducted research into Shell's contribution to the energy supply in the Netherlands. The consultancy firm concludes that Shell has made a substantial contribution to Dutch energy security in recent decades. One of the most important contributions relates to gas storage capacity. Between 2011 and 2024, NAM's storage facilities (50% Shell, 50% ExxonMobil) accounted for an average of 69% of the total gas in Dutch storage.
With the oil and gas production via NAM and the refining of fuels at Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, Shell made an important contribution to the Dutch energy supply. By simultaneously investing in sustainable projects, Shell is contributing to the transition to a lower-emissions energy system, while ensuring Dutch energy security in the longer term, according to Oxford Economics. Shell's renewable energy capacity increased from 3% in total final electricity consumption in 2022 to 9% in 2024.
Energy of today and the future
"The Netherlands is an important country for Shell," says Frans Everts, President-Director of Shell Netherlands. "Almost all of our activities are represented here. We provide the energy we need today and are working hard to create a lower-emissions energy system for the future. In recent years, we have made investment decisions in the Dutch energy transition worth 6.5 billion euros. We are now building and innovating, so that we can continue to play an important role here in the future."
Impact of R&D expenditure on the Dutch economy
Oxford Economics also looked at the impact of Shell's R&D spending on the Dutch economy. In 2022, Shell invested 338 million euros in research in the Netherlands, mainly related to energy transition. The consultancy firm estimates that this will generate 151 million euros per year for the economy from 2030 onwards, as it enables all in the Netherlands to work more efficiently and get more done. Investments in research and innovation go beyond direct R&D expenditure. From its Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam, Shell works with start-ups, scale-ups, knowledge institutes, academics and companies on solutions for the energy transition.
