DHL Express-bestelbussen in Nederland kunnen nu grootschalig laden
Shell en DHL Express werken in Nederland aan het verduurzamen van de pakketbezorgdienst. Bij DHL Express in Nieuw-Vennep heeft Shell 45 elektrische laadpunten voor de bestelbussen geplaatst die snel uit te breiden zijn. Dankzij slimme software is meer netcapaciteit niet nodig en met Shell Dynamic Load Balancing kunnen de busjes opladen, terwijl er genoeg stroom overblijft voor de overige bedrijfssystemen.

“Het plaatsen van elektrische laadpalen bij DHL Express past in ons aanbod aan oplossingen voor bedrijven op hun eigen terrein”, stelt Fedde Wielenga, hoofd van Fleet Solutions van Shell Nederland. Fleet Solutions heeft de zakelijke mobiliteitsoplossingen van Shell onder zijn hoede. Wielenga: “Naast elektrische laadpalen valt te denken aan hernieuwbare diesel voor zware vrachtwagens en laadpunten voor e-trucks.”
In september, bij de ingebruikname van 125 Shell-laders en Dynamic Load Balancing bij DHL Aviation in Brussel, kondigde Shell aan dat er meer wagenparken zouden volgen, ook in Nederland. Die belofte wordt nu ingelost bij DHL Express in Nieuw-Vennep, als eerste van de Nederlandse locaties. “Van de 450 bestelbussen die bij DHL Express in Nederland rijden, is zo'n 20% geheel elektrisch”, vervolgt Wielenga.
Binnen het stroomafnamecontract
Overstappen naar elektrisch rijden stelt bedrijven voor uitdagingen. Zo is er vaak een maximum hoeveelheid stroom af te nemen binnen het elektriciteitscontract. Uitbreiding van dat contract is doorgaans duur of vanwege overbelasting op het landelijke elektriciteitsnet niet mogelijk. Het slimme controlesysteem van Shells Dynamic Load Balancing zorgt ervoor dat de energievraag onder het maximum blijft door de energievraag van de laadpalen en machines optimaal op elkaar af te stemmen.
“Met de realisatie van laadinfrastructuur op onze locatie in Nieuw-Vennep zijn we dichterbij ons doel gekomen. Als DHL Express Nederland willen we graag in 2030 onze last-mile delivery 100% duurzaam uitvoeren. Door het in gebruik nemen van de laadpalen van Shell kunnen we onze vloot verder elektrificeren”, zegt Kees de Lange, managing director van DHL Express Nederland.
Geen enkele bedrijfslocatie is hetzelfde
Voor bedrijven die hun bedrijfsactiviteiten willen verduurzamen, biedt Shell verschillende oplossingen. Zo kijkt Shell samen met klanten naar batterijopslag om tijdens piekmomenten op het netwerk toch over voldoende stroom te kunnen beschikken. Biobrandstoffen vormen een ander alternatief. Wielenga: “Geen enkele bedrijfslocatie is hetzelfde. Oplossingen vragen om maatwerk, om luisteren en flexibiliteit, om aanpassen en finetunen. Vanuit Shell vertellen we niet hoe het moet, maar laten we zien hoe het kan.”

DHL Express delivery vans in the Netherlands now charge at scale

Shell and DHL Express have joined forces in the Netherlands to make parcel delivery services more sustainable. At the DHL Express location in Nieuw-Vennep, 20 kilometres (12 miles) southwest of the centre of Amsterdam, Shell has installed 45 electric vehicle chargers for the delivery vans. The number can be expanded quickly if needed. Thanks to smart software, more grid capacity is not needed. With Shell’s Dynamic Load Balancing the vans are able to charge, while power for the other business systems is guaranteed.
"Installing the EV chargers with DHL Express fits in with our range of solutions for company locations," says Fedde Wielenga, Head of Fleet Solutions at Shell Netherlands. Fleet Solutions is responsible for Shell's business mobility solutions. Wielenga: "In addition to EV chargers, renewable diesel for heavy-duty trucks and chargers for e-trucks can be considered."
In September, with the commissioning of 125 Shell EV chargers and Dynamic Load Balancing at DHL Aviation in Brussels, Belgium, Shell announced that more fleets would follow, including in the Netherlands. That promise is now being fulfilled at DHL Express in Nieuw-Vennep as the first Dutch site for the parcel delivery company. "About 20% of the 450 delivery vans of DHL Express in the Netherlands are already fully electric," Wielenga says.
Within the power purchase contract
Switching to electric driving poses challenges for companies. For example, there is often a maximum amount of electricity that can be purchased within the electricity contract. Extending that contract is usually expensive or not possible due to overload on the national electricity grid. The smart control system of Shell's Dynamic Load Balancing ensures that the energy demand remains below the maximum by optimally matching the energy demand of the charging stations and machines.
"With the inauguration of the charging infrastructure at our location in Nieuw-Vennep, we have come closer to our goal. As DHL Express Netherlands, we would like to make our last-mile delivery 100% sustainable by 2030. By commissioning Shell's EV chargers, we can further electrify our fleet," says Kees de Lange, Managing Director of DHL Express Netherlands.
Not a single business site is like another
For companies that want to make their business activities more sustainable, Shell offers various solutions. For example, Shell is working with customers to implement battery storage to have sufficient power available when the grid peaks in demand. Biofuels are another alternative. Wielenga: "Not a single business site is like another. Solutions require customization, listening and flexibility, adapting and fine-tuning. At Shell, we don't tell you how to do it, but we show how it can be done."
