75 jaar Shell en Ferrari: hoe het avontuur begon

In 2025 zijn Shell en Ferrari officieel al 75 jaar partners, maar op zoek naar de eerste sporen van dit partnerschap stuiten we in de Shell-archieven op een eeuwenoude foto uit 1924. Shell levert in dat jaar de brandstof en smeermiddelen voor een veelbelovende jonge coureur uit Modena: Enzo Ferrari. Op de foto zit hij achter het stuur van een raceauto. En wat blijkt? Dit is niet een Ferrari, maar een Alfa Romeo.
Ferrari begon in 1920 als coureur bij Alfa Romeo. Je ziet hem hier in Alfa’s eerste sportmodel na de Eerste Wereldoorlog: de RL Targa Florio. Met 3620 cc, 125 pk en een topsnelheid van 180 km/u. De zwart-witfoto verraadt het niet, maar de wagen was Ferrari-rood met een wit vlak en een klavertje vier op de zijkant van de neus.
En geluk bracht het. In 1924 behaalde de toen 26-jarige coureur met deze auto de overwinning in de allereerste editie van de Coppa Acerbo. Dat was een van de meest prestigieuze races van die tijd, gehouden in de Italiaanse kustplaats Pescara, zo’n 100 kilometer ten noordoosten van Rome.
In 1929 richtte de Italiaan onder de vlag van Alfa het raceteam Scuderia Ferrari op, waarbij scuderia Italiaans is voor renstal. Tien jaar later, inmiddels vader en in de veertig, verliet Enzo Ferrari Alfa Romeo om zijn eigen weg te gaan. De rest is geschiedenis.
Ferrari is tot op de dag van vandaag het enige team dat sinds het begin van de Formule 1 in 1950 aan elk seizoen heeft deelgenomen. En Shell was er al die tijd bij. Tijdens de Grand Prix van Monaco op 25 mei vieren Shell en Ferrari 75 jaar partnerschap in topsport.

In 2025, Shell and Ferrari will have officially been partners for 75 years. But looking for the first traces of this partnership, we come across a century-old photo in the Shell archives. In 1924, Shell was supplying the fuel and lubricants for a promising young driver from Modena: Enzo Ferrari. In the photo, he is behind the wheel of a race car. Not a Ferrari, but an Alfa Romeo.

Ferrari's career began in 1920 as a driver at Alfa Romeo. The photo shows the company's first post-World War I sports model: the RL Targa Florio. With 3620 cc, 125 hp and a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph). The black and white photo does not give it away, but the car was painted in a "Ferrari red" livery, with a white details and a four-leaf clover on the side of the nose.
It did bring him luck. In 1924, the then 26-year-old driver won the very first edition of the Coppa Acerbo with his race car. At the time it was was one of the most prestigious races, held in the Italian coastal city of Pescara, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of Rome.
In 1929, the Italian started his own racing team under the flag of Alfa Romeo: Scuderia Ferrari, with scuderia being Italian for "stable". Ten years later, as a father and in his forties, Enzo Ferrari left Alfa Romeo to go his own way. The rest is history.
To this day, Ferrari is the only team to have competed in every season since the beginning of Formula 1 World Championship of Drivers in 1950. And Shell was there all along. This year, during the Monaco Grand Prix on 25 May, Shell and Ferrari will celebrate 75 years of partnership in top sports.
