Duration: 3:27 minutes
Description:
What do Graduates do in IT? What is it like at Shell and what does the future hold for them? Graduates at Shell share their experiences and what's it really like starting their career at Shell in IT.
[Annmarie]
My name is Annmarie McGann
and my job title at Shell
is a programme analyst
in the Downstream Information
Risk Management team.
[Ryan]
I'm Ryan Foreman
and I'm a business analyst working in
Customer Data and Analytics.
[Karen]
I'm Karen Nassif.
I joined Shell 18 months ago
on the Shell Graduate Programme,
as a business analyst
in Shell Trading and Shipping.
[Dean]
My name is Dean Davies.
I'm the mobile motorist product owner
for Shell.
[Annmarie]
This work that I've been doing
on the Payment Compliance Programme,
that's all about making sure that
we, as a company,
are robust enough
to protect our consumer data.
[Dean]
I'm, really, design,
at the start of the process.
So when the business has an idea,
or if someone in IT has an idea
that they think is viable
for the application,
I will take that idea
and bring it to reality.
[Karen]
I've just completed a cargo
tracking project for the traders,
in order for them to track their ships
and track their cargo better,
in order to make better decisions.
[Ryan]
I work, at the moment, in retail.
We want to be able to capture
all this different information
about our customers,
perform analytics on it,
and make sure we're giving
our customers the best offers,
so they'll come to us,
not to out our competitors.
[Ryan]
Connect IT is our graduate and
young professional community in Shell.
[Karen]
I feel part of a very diverse
and a very young, ambitious community
that is dedicated to better Shell
and to better themselves every day.
[Ryan]
During work hours,
we arrange meetings with senior leaders,
with our CIOs.
And also, we try to share experiences.
[Annmarie]
If I do ever find myself in a problem
where I perhaps need that extra help,
I'm always made to feel OK about
just going up to one of my colleagues
and just asking them to go grab a coffee
and talk about it.
That's encouraged in our environment.
It's not seen as taking time off work,
it's seen as personal development
and sharing.
That's why it makes me feel
really empowered working there.
[Ryan]
It's great
because everyone's really supportive.
They want to help each other
when they're just joining,
or if they're going through
a difficult situation.
It's a really good resource.
[Karen]
IT is very important to Shell
because it enables us
to make those processes quicker
and more lean.
It enables us to be smarter.
[Ryan]
I think IT is going to play
a key role in the future.
[Dean]
You won't always be working
on something you like,
but you know that
there's opportunities out there
for you to go and find
in something that you're interested
and enthusiastic towards.
[Annmarie]
What I'm starting to see already
is that I'm enjoying
the people development
and management aspect of things.
[Dean]
I would like to be an innovation manager
or a lead in a big, larger team.
[Ryan]
I think the next thing I want to go into
is coming up with brand new ideas
and seeing them
taking a new technology,
testing it out
and trying to implement it.
[Karen]
I think Shell is phenomenal in
its project delivery on big IT projects.
I want to be part of that.
[Dean]
Be prepared for innovation.
Be prepared for new demands
in a global world.
And be prepared to have
new competitors
and new challenges on a daily basis.

Jacqueline Voncken
Process Control Technologist
[Jacqueline Voncken]
I was looking for a technical company which could offer me a lot of job opportunities, a nice technical job with a lot of support for development, and also a place where the culture felt nice.
Wide-angled shot of Jacqueline approaching and walking up some stairs towards a building. Beside the stairs are two small walls painted in blue. At the top of the stairs, she drops something in a small bin. Just in front of her is a large blue door. Beside the door is a large yellow sign. At the top of the sign is a blue banner with white text inside reading RWH Controlekamer. In the middle of the sign is a diagonal red line. Just above said red line written in blue is CCR, and just underneath the red line a large yellow three. At the bottom of the sign is another blue banner with white text reading vergunninguitgifte. Jacqueline opens the blue door and enters the building.
Scene change to an inside view. Close-up shot of Jacqueline and a white-haired man beside her. They are talking as she points to something in front of them. Wider shot of the room they are in. Jacqueline and the man are sitting in a control room at a long, slightly curved desk with a double row of monitors in front of them, each monitor displaying something different. Jacqueline points to one of the monitors, then lowers her arm and points to the monitor just below. Close-up shot of Jacqueline and the man as he is talking to her. Wider view of the room as the man is gesticulating. Jacqueline is looking at the man as he talks, then both look back at the monitors. Scene change back to Jacqueline outside for her interview. As she talks, she gesticulates with her hands.
[Jacqueline Voncken]
Yes, I just felt comfortable when I was here.
Close-up shot of Jacqueline’s face as she looks down. Shot of Jacqueline’s hand scanning over a black and white detailed plan. Scene change back to Jacqueline outside.
[Jacqueline Voncken]
My job title within Shell is process control technologist.
Shot panning up of the outside site where Jacqueline is being interviewed. The production unit is a complex network of pipes and tanks with metal staircases in between. Side shot of two large white tanks. Wide-angled shot panning down showing a larger view of the production site. Rising out from behind all the pipes are two chimneys.
[Jacqueline Voncken]
We are standing in front of the production units that I’m supporting.
Close-up side shot of Jacqueline holding a large notepad, pointing to something in front of her. She then subsequently looks back down at the notepad which shows the aforementioned detailed plan of the production site.
[Jacqueline Voncken]
I’m giving day-to-day support to the operators of these units.
Wide-angled shot of Jacqueline outside holding her notepad talking to two operators dressed in red work gear and yellow helmets. Behind them, a concrete path, a large white tank, a complex network of pipes and other structures. Jacqueline points to something in the distance as one of the operators looks down at her notepad. Back to the wide-angled view of Jacqueline outside for her interview.
[Jacqueline Voncken]
By automating as much as possible, we can make the processes safer and more efficient.
Back to the shot of Jacqueline and the operators. Jacqueline points to something in the distance as one of the operators looks down at her plan and then subsequently also points in the same direction. Scene change back to the control room. Close side shot of Jacqueline and the man. The man speaks and points to one of the monitors in front of them. Jacqueline then points to the same monitor as they continue talking.
[Jacqueline Voncken]
I like that it’s very diverse. There is never a dull moment and that you get a lot of opportunities to develop in different directions.
Scene change back to the shot of Jacqueline outside for her interview. As she talks, she gesticulates with her hands. White background with text appearing.

Peter Loeffen
Process Control Technologist
[Video footage]
Scene change to a sequence of shots of Peter riding a bicycle around the production site.
[Peter Loeffen]
I studied aerospace engineering at the Technical University Delft.
Back the shot of Peter standing outside for his interview.
[Peter Loeffen]
I chose Shell because it’s more academic I think than most companies and that’s what appealed to me.
Scene change to a close-up shot of Peter’s fingers scanning a detailed black and white plan. Pan up from the plan to show a wider view of Peter sitting at a desk beside a window. On his desk is the plan, a computer monitor, keyboard, mouse, closed laptop, headset, telephone, pens and a glass bottle of water. On the windowsill sits a radio. Peter is looking closely at the plan, then looks up to his monitor.
[Peter Loeffen]
I’m a process control technologist. I make control lists. The plant I’m responsible for runs from that side all the way to that side.
Scene change back to the outside view of the production unit where Peter is standing for his interview. He turns slightly to the right and gesticulates with his arm to the furthest part of the production unit on the right, then turns, still pointing his arm, all the way to the left part of the production unit. Wide shot of a red brick chimney with some metal stairs down the side, panning down showing several pipes, valves and other structures beside it.
[Peter Loeffen]
My job is to automate the plant, which means making an autopilot for the plant.
Scene change to a wide side-shot of Peter inside a control room. Peter and a man wearing a green khaki long-sleeved shirt with the Shell logo on it are sitting at a long, slightly curved desk with a double row of monitors in front of them, each monitor displaying something different. One monitor displays a range of graphs. Behind those monitors there are more screens on the wall above them, and on the other side of the room behind where they are sitting there is another desk also with a double row of monitors. Two more men dressed in red Shell work gear are in the room, one sitting and one standing.
[Peter Loeffen]
And if I don’t do my job right, it will not run optimally or it will not run at all, which is quite a big responsibility for a graduate, but that’s what Shell gives you, responsibility.
Closer shot taken from behind Peter and his colleague. We see them sitting down, the back of their chairs, as Peter points to one of the monitors in front of them. Side shot of Peter talking to his colleague. Scene change back to Peter outside the plant being interviewed.
[Peter Loeffen]
I get a lot of trainings, I get a lot of courses, but I also get the opportunity to go to Singapore to exchange our knowledge and the technologies they use there so that we can use them here.
Scene change to a side shot of Peter standing inside an office writing on a whiteboard. Next, a shot taken from behind showing a wider view of the room Peter is in. Peter is drawing a diagram. Next to the whiteboard on the right is another board with several papers stuck to it, one with the Shell logo on it. Behind Peter is a red chair. To the left of the whiteboard a calendar hangs on the white wall. Zoom in on Peter’s hand as he continues his diagram. Scene change back to the shot of Peter being interviewed outside. Moving shot showcasing the production unit behind Peter panning from left to right.
[Peter Loeffen]
I think we can be a major contributor to sustainability. I think that’s our future role.
More detailed shot panning from right to left of a complex network of pipes and valves constructed over concrete legs. Next, a wide-angled shot of a range of chimneys, each a different height, with staircases running down the side. On the far left, white steam/smoke blows out of one of the lower chimneys. Back to the shot of Peter being interviewed.
[Peter Loeffen]
I would like to help contribute to making Shell more sustainable.
