Talitha is onderhoudstechnicus bij Shell in Pernis
“Shell wilde graag meer vrouwen, dus werd mij gevraagd: zou je het leuk lijken om naar Shell te gaan? Tuurlijk, zei ik.” Talitha Marcus, is onderhoudstechnicus Hoogspanning en distributie bij Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam in Pernis. “Wat ik doe is niet zomaar werk. Het is een kans om echt impact te maken.”

Dat was 7 jaar geleden. Inmiddels kent Talitha goed haar weg op het complex in Pernis. Met haar team zorgt ze ervoor dat de fabrieken van stroom worden voorzien. "We doen het onderhoud, de inspecties en voorbereidingen, zoeken dingen uit. En dan komen er ook nog storingen en onverwachte situaties tussendoor en daar proberen we zo slim mogelijk mee om te gaan. Geen dag is hetzelfde.”
Elektrotechniek studeren en werken
Talitha kwam bij Shell terecht via een opleidings- en detacheringsbureau. “Zo kon ik elektrotechniek studeren en tegelijkertijd werken. Ik woonde al op mezelf, dus had een inkomen nodig. Mijn broer werkte al bij Shell en onder meer van hem kende ik het als een fijne werkgever. Als vrouw kan het soms lastig zijn om in de techniek te werken, maar ik merk daar niets van. Iedereen heeft respect voor elkaar.”
Dankzij flexibele begin- en eindtijden kan Talitha haar kinderen zelf naar school brengen. De Rotterdamse en haar man doen dat doet om beurten. Dat waardeer ik enorm. Ze is zich ervan bewust dat haar inzet impact maakt voor het bedrijf. “We zijn volop bezig met de energietransitie, met projecten die helpen om de CO2-uitstoot te verlagen. Het is gaaf om te weten dat mijn werk daar een rol in speelt.”
Hoogspanningsmoffen
Ze blijft ook zichzelf ontwikkelen bij Shell. “Mijn jongste cursus ging over het maken van hoogspanningsmoffen, waarmee je doorgeknipte kabels aan elkaar kunt koppelen. Ik wil ook heel graag de cursus over kabelmetingen doen. Daarnaast leer ik veel uit de praktijk. Mijn collega's zijn net zo gedreven als ik.“
Op zo’n groot terrein als van Shell in Pernis is het soms zoeken naar de denkbeeldige speld in de hooiberg. Talitha: “Zo hadden we afgelopen jaar een grote storing bij een van de fabrieken. Een schakelaar bleek op getript – defect – als gevolg van een los contact. Waarom was niet duidelijk, maar na veel onderzoek met diverse afdelingen wisten we het probleem te fixen. Toen werd me goed duidelijk hoeveel talent en diversiteit er binnen Shell is.”

“Shell wanted more women, so I was asked: would you be interested in joining Shell? Sure, I said.” Talitha Marcus is a High Voltage and Distribution Maintenance Technician at Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam in Pernis, the Netherlands. “What I do isn’t just a job. It’s a chance to really make an impact.”

That was seven years ago. By now, Talitha knows her way around the Pernis complex well. Together with her team, she ensures the factories are supplied with power. “We do maintenance, inspections, and preparations, investigate issues. And then there are also malfunctions and unexpected situations that we try to handle as smartly as possible. No day is the same.”
Studying and working in electrical engineering
Talitha joined Shell through a training and secondment agency. “That way, I could study electrical engineering while working at the same time. I was already living on my own, so I needed an income. My brother already worked at Shell, and through him I knew it was a good employer. As a woman, it can sometimes be challenging to work in engineering, but I haven’t experienced that. Everyone respects each other.”
Thanks to flexible start and end times, Talitha can take her children to school herself. She and her husband take turns doing that. “I really appreciate that.” She’s aware that her work has an impact on the company. “We’re actively working on the energy transition, with projects that help reduce CO₂ emissions. It’s great to know that my work plays a role in that.”
High-voltage joints
Talitha continues to develop herself at Shell. “My most recent course was about making high-voltage joints, which are used to connect cut cables. I also really want to take the course on cable measurements. Besides that, I learn a lot on the job. My colleagues are just as driven as I am.”
On a site as large as Shell’s in Pernis, it can sometimes feel like looking for a needle in a haystack. Talitha: “Last year, we had a major malfunction at one of the factories. A switch had tripped — was defective — due to a loose contact. The cause wasn’t clear, but after a lot of searching with various departments, we managed to fix the problem. That really showed me how much talent and diversity there is within Shell.”
