Shell gebruikt plastic afval om chemicaliën te produceren

Shell heeft met succes hoogwaardige chemicaliën geproduceerd met behulp van een vloeibare grondstof gemaakt van plastic afval. De techniek wordt beschouwd als een doorbraak voor moeilijk te recyclen kunststoffen en versterkt de ambitie van Shell om tegen 2025 een miljoen ton plastic afval per jaar te verwerken in haar chemische fabrieken wereldwijd.
“Dit is goed voor het milieu en voor ons bedrijf”, zegt Thomas Casparie, Executive Vice President van Shells wereldwijde chemieactiviteiten. ”We willen kunststofafval dat met traditionele methoden moeilijk te recyclen is, weer in chemicaliën omzetten en daarmee een kringloop tot stand brengen. Deze chemicaliën komen tegemoet aan de groeiende vraag van onze klanten naar hoogwaardige en duurzame producten.”
Nexus Fuels LLC uit Atlanta heeft onlangs zijn eerste lading pyrolysevloeistof afgeleverd bij de chemische fabriek van Shell in Norco, Louisiana, VS, waar het werd verwerkt tot chemicaliën die de basis vormen voor alledaagse producten. Shell werkt samen met meerdere bedrijven die plastic afval inzamelen en transformeren om deze oplossing op te schalen naar industriële en winstgevende hoeveelheden in zijn chemische fabrieken in Azië, Europa en Noord-Amerika.
Shell is een van de oprichters van de Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW). Deze organisatie zonder winstoogmerk brengt topmensen uit de gehele plastic waardeketen (producenten van chemicaliën en plastic, bedrijven in consumentengoederen, detailhandelaren, afvalverwerkings- en afvalbeheerbedrijven) bij elkaar en werkt samen met de financiële sector, overheden en het maatschappelijk middenveld. De AEPW heeft de komende vijf jaar $ 1,5 miljard gereserveerd om een einde te helpen maken aan plastic afval in het milieu. Shell werkt bovendien samen met zijn klanten in de sectoren retail, zakelijke brandstoffen en lubricants om plastic verpakkingen te helpen verminderen, hergebruiken en recyclen.
